Eyebrow Specialist?

I guess there must be plenty of weird jobs in the world.

But I heard of one the other day that stopped me in my tracks: Eyebrow specialist.

That’s right. Eyebrow specialist: A person who specializes in sculpting perfect eyebrows for a particular individual’s face.

From my research: Eyebrow specialists work at salons and beauty establishments to shape and manage a customer's eyebrows using a variety of techniques including waxing, trimming, threading and plucking.

Anyone interested in becoming an eyebrow specialist starts by attending beautician school and taking classes on eyebrow shaping and grooming.

With that education, the eyebrow specialist wannabe can obtain regional beautician certification and begin working in a salon or waxing studio.

According to one posting on the Internet: “The shape of eyebrows can frame a person's face and drastically alter one's overall personal appearance. Many people choose to visit an eyebrow specialist regularly to groom and maintain their eyebrow presentation.

“As people look to eyebrow specialists to provide advice on what type of shape looks best for their face, you will need to learn to recognize appropriate eyebrow styles depending on customer look and preference.

“Generally, most of the skills you need to work will be learned through hands-on experience and watching experienced eyebrow specialists perform their work.”

OK. I don’t want to sound sexist here -- but are you kidding me?

Of course, there are – no doubt – some men who spend A LOT of time making sure their eyebrows are just perfect. But mostly it’s females who are going in for these particular “beauty” services: Manicures, pedicures, eyelash extenders, eye shadow treatments, cheekbone enhancers, Botox injections, a variety of creams, lotions and oils, etc., etc.

And now: eyebrow sculpting by eyebrow specialists.

Two thoughts come to mind: Why would anyone need an “eyebrow specialist” to trim, shape and/or dye their brows? Don’t they have mirrors and tiny scissors and tweezers in their homes?

The second thought is: Why would anyone feel the need to specialize in eyebrow services? Couldn’t that just be an “extra” service the hair beautician might provide?

And does eyebrow sculpting REALLY require that much schooling and specialization? After all, it’s just two small strips of hair located directly above the eyes.

I guess some people just have too much money. And there's always going to be those folks ready to relieve them of it.

Look: I have a similar situation, you might say, on my face. I have a mustache – actually a goatee – that I need to trim every few days. It’s pretty easy actually: Just a little time spent in front of a mirror with my tiny scissors and shaver.

I don’t have any special training to do my own trimming, nor do I go to a “goatee specialist” to have my goat-like beard trimmed. (I’m pretty sure they – goatee specialists – don’t exist anyway.)

But I get the job done myself -- and I think it’s fine.

Still, I will say this about some of the male eyebrows I have seen: They can get to be incredibly bushy and … well, intimidating to some onlookers.

Maybe these so-called “eyebrow specialists” should consider offering their services to these overly-eyebrow-endowed males.

It could result in a real breakthrough in male beauty…

Several things!

  1. I was blessed with the bushy, dark brows.......so yes people spend money to have someone else do the painful work, often a wax, which is hard to do oneself many times without injury. (Want to apply hot wax above your eyeball with one closed?) It can be a thrill. 🫣🙆

  2. Those ladies who ",thread" literally swipe your brows off with floss or something are impressive and I don't pretend to know how they're trained but EYE myself doubt I could learn.

  3. Whilst researching Serena Williams yesterday I inadvertently learned she is a licensed nail technician 😜😆, different dealio but this reminded me of that surprise discovery.

  4. So yeah, it seems frivolous but to many women it's a great…
