Super Yachts for Super Jerks

What’s the most obnoxious thing about the Super Rich?

Besides never paying their fair share of taxes, that is.

Yes, it’s their multi-million-dollar mansions and their $750,000 Rolex watches (I kid you not) and their $1 million-plus space rides for other Richies.

But one thing that really gets me is their Super Yachts.

Tiger Woods' yacht

I just saw an article on the Internet that showed some of the richest jerks on the planet and the mega-million-dollar yachts -- some exceeding $1 billion -- they have to sail around the world whenever the notion strikes them.

You know the basic cast: DiCaprio, Woods, Spielberg, Clapton, Beyonce, etc. etc.

Even Bono – he of U2 fame and a high-profile social activist – has a Super Yacht.

Yes, the Fat Cats who made it BIG in their chosen pursuits of fame and raked in ungodly amounts of money.

Those jerks.

OK — I know some may be thinking: Well, they probably worked VERY hard to achieve their Greatness and deserve to spend their piles of moolah on whatever their little hearts desire, right?

That’s true, of course. Life is short and those who can afford the Good Things ought to be able to enjoy them.

But I wonder if these Super Rich have any idea how the rest of the world lives.

And dies.

From poverty and malnutrition and war and pestilence.

People sometimes say: "Many of the Super Rich are no doubt giving away large amounts of their largesse and not taking any public credit for it."

Oh…are they? Really?

I understand the whole “I don’t need the publicity for my Good Deeds, I just want to make an anonymous contribution to this-or-that charity or cause” proposition.

But that makes it easy for those who don’t share their wealth and good fortune to fly under the radar, making us wonder if they really ARE doing some good behind the scenes with all that extra cash.

Granted, some of the Super Rich DO use a portion of their money for good. Bill Gates and the Gates Foundation comes to mind. And there are others.

But I think they are very much in the minority.

I would really like to know who among the Super Rich has a heart and a social conscience and who is just flaunting their money and success with no regard for those who will never have anything remotely close to that.

I have many personal heroes – and I don’t want to name names here – who I KNOW are Super Rich and I often wonder if they are sharing any of that cash that they’ll never be able to spend in one lifetime with the far-less-fortunate.

All I can say is: I hope all of you Super Rich people sleep well and live extremely fun and fulfilling lives -- buying just about anything you want.

But you can’t buy a conscience.
